The only way to do that, I think, is to start saying to them, ‘We’re going to provide you training, we’ll provide you logistical support, we will provide you counter-insurgency, our troops will still be in the Middle East to ensure that there are no regional problems, but what we’re not going to do is continue to oversee what has effectively become a sectarian war’.”
